Chapter 4 The Best Job

The woman’s hair fell to her shoulders in waves. She was dressed in a white blouse and skirt, and she had heels on. She looked good but seemed rather standoffish.

She was discussing something with the landlord, Alan Smith.

When Alan saw Sam, he immediately got up and smiled apologetically. “Mr. Parker, you’re here.”

“I apologize for interrupting,” Sam said.

The woman glanced at Sam. She frowned slightly but remained silent.

Sam was a little lost. “Mr. Smith, is anything wrong?”

Alan chuckled awkwardly and said, “Mr. Parker, here’s the situation. This lady wants to buy this place over, so I came over to explain things to you and show her around as well.”

It was obvious that Alan was discomfited. After all, he had only just rented the place to Sam that very morning.

Sam immediately became annoyed after hearing Alan’s explanation. “Mr. Smith, what do you mean by this? I just moved here this morning. Is this how you conduct your business?”

“Mr. Parker, please don’t get mad. How about this, I’ll refund what you’ve paid and give you an extra month’s rent as an apology. What say you?”

In all honesty, this was the first time Alan had encountered such a situation after being a landlord for years.

Sam ignored him and said to Anne, “Anne, you go get some rest first. I have something I need to discuss with Mr. Smith.”

Anne nodded obediently and went into the room.

At that moment, the woman next to Alan fl*pped her hair over her shoulder and said indifferently, “Mr. Smith, I’ll pay the penalty on your behalf!”

Sam glanced at her. It was obvious from the way she was dressed that she came from an affluent family.

Alan gave Sam a glance. He felt guilty as he knew he was in the wrong. An idea formed in his mind and he said, “Look, why don’t you talk this over with Ms. Diaz yourself, Mr. Parker? I have something to attend to, so I’ll get going!” He fled the scene as quickly as he could.

Sam cursed Alan inwardly as he glanced at the woman. “Ms. Diaz, you don’t look like you’re in need of money. Why are you buying a house in such an old neighborhood?”

The woman, Avery Diaz, shot Sam a contemptuous look before saying, “Does it have anything to do with you?”

“Of course. I’m the tenant here. If you were to buy this place, where would I stay?” Sam retorted.

Avery was speechless. She said exasperatedly, “Well, too bad. This house is mine now. As for you… you’ll need to move out tomorrow!” With that, she left.

He did not have high hopes of finding anything, but he still wanted to give it a shot.

On the other hand, in a private room at the Rovers Bar.

The interior of the room was in complete upheaval. A man stood there, his expression ugly.

Another man stood in front of him, not daring to speak. It was James, whose arm Sam had ripped off. He was trembling and his face was ashen.

The man with the ugly expression was John Carter, also known as “Mr. Carter”, a renowned and influential figure in Queenstown.

John furiously smashed the wine glass in his hand and gave James a tight slap. “You’re a worthless piece of shit. How could so many of you lose to one punk? What’s the point of me having you around, then?” He gave James another kick.

James felt wrong but he dared not fight back. He could not help trembling at the memory of the deadliness in Sam’s eyes.

James glanced at John and stuttered, “Mr. Carter… I did a background ch*ck on him. He’s called Sam Parker, and he was formerly in the army before leaving three years ago. He should be the man we’re looking for.” He paused, took a deep breath, and continued, “He also said…”

“Can you f**king finish what you want to say in one go? Useless piece of shit,” John roared.

Seeing that John was truly angered, James quickly continued, “He said… He said that you had three days to surrender yourself to him, or he wouldn’t mind paying you a visit…”

“F**k him!” John was already boiling with anger, and Sam’s message just made things worse. No one in Queenstown dared to speak to him like that, yet this little f**ker was acting so arrogantly. Did he have a death wish?

A cold smile formed on John’s face as he said, “Very well, then… I’ll give him another three days to live!” The murderous intent in his words was glaringly obvious.

James bit his l*p and asked, “Mr. Carter… should we inform the Parker family about this?”

“Those scumbags have already forgotten about this whole thing. Go inform them on your own if you want to get into more trouble, you f**king idiot!” John spat.

Early the next morning, Sam’s phone rang unexpectedly.

“Hello, Mr. Parker, we saw your post from yesterday. Are you looking for a job?”

Sam was stunned. He did not expect that anyone would really call him. He immediately replied, “Yes, yes.”

“Glad to hear that. I’ve run through your resume, and you’re quite a good fit for our requirements. Are you available this morning?”

“Uh…” Sam was taken aback. What was going on? “You’re able to fulfill my requirements?”

“Don’t worry about that, Mr. Parker. Since you’re a good fit for us, we’ll definitely fulfill your requirements. Just to clarify, you spent three years at the Queenstown Psychiatric Hospital, and you also have a daughter?”

Sam’s heart sank. It looked like he was in for some disappointment. “Yes, that’s right.”

“That’s great. You can start immediately! I’ve already sent you the address.”

Though the call was already over, Sam was still at a loss for words. What the hell was happening? Was he stuck in a dream?

Regardless, he still had to go over there and ch*ck things out. Nothing mattered more than treating Anne’s illness.

He instructed Shadow to stay with Anne before taking a cab to his destination, the Diaz Group.

Sam was puzzled and confused as he stared at the towering building in front of him.

When he entered the building, the receptionist asked, “Mr. Parker, are you here regarding a job application?”

“Yes, I am,” he answered.

The receptionist let out a slight laugh.

Sam did not understand what was going on. He felt a little awkward.

The receptionist led him to a conference hall on the 18th floor. It was already filled with people, and there was a huge screen on the wall that displayed the words
